Long-Term Care 101

The month of November is National Long-Term Care Awareness Month; I thought I would share some helpful information with you regarding Long- Term Care.

Here is an excerpt from Dave Ramsey that explains very eloquently what Long-Term Care is.

"When you imagine your retirement, you probably picture yourself in your dream home, on a boat or at the very least living a contented lifestyle. But if you don't plan for the setbacks that life can throw at you, your retirement fund might be wiped out.

What type of setbacks am I talking about? I'm talking about assisted living, nursing homes and other long-term care needs.

No one wants to think about having to place yourself or a loved one in a long-term care facility. But, sadly, many people must face this harsh reality every year. According to the American Association of Home and Services for the Aging, 69% of people will need some form of long-term care after age 65.

The big problem

Most health and disability insurance won't pay for long-term care. Therefore, people who have not planned ahead for such a situation have to use their retirement money to cover the costs. And the costs are expensive. Long-term care can cost up to $300,000 and more over the course of just 3 to 4 years.

Medicaid will only cover those who qualify, so that's not an option for most people. And don't make the criminal mistake of moving assets out of a parent's name to qualify for Medicaid. That's fraud-a federal crime-and the government will prosecute.

How to protect yourself

Thankfully, there are plenty of relatively inexpensive insurance options that can protect you and your retirement account.

Long-term care insurance covers bills for nursing homes and at-home nursing for those unable to care for themselves, which can include people suffering from Alzheimer's disease and much more.

Again, without insurance, you can significantly deplete-if not clean out-your retirement income."

I hope this has given you a little insight on Long-term care and the importance of having a good Long- term care insurance policy. You will enrich your life and the lives of your family members by helping you maintain your independence and giving you peace of mind.
